Apple Backs Google Against EU Android AI Rules

Apple has thrown its support behind Google in the company's fight against EU regulations that would require opening Android to third-party AI services. Both tech giants argue that such measures would undermine critical privacy and security for European users by allowing competing AI services access to personal data from apps like email clients and photo sharing services.

The European Commission is enforcing the Digital Markets Act to ensure fair competition in the AI space, requiring Google to provide the same access to Android that its own Gemini technology receives. Apple echoed Google's concerns in official feedback, warning that the draft rules would create "profound risks" since AI systems remain unpredictable.

Apple has admitted its strong interest in the case, as the commission is also probing the company separately. Apple has consistently opposed the DMA, which requires it to allow third-party app marketplaces on iOS. The tech giant accused the EU of using political delay tactics in its investigation following the shutdown of an alternative app store.
