Volvo is refreshing the XC40 for 2028 model year with significant visual and tech upgrades, but it will discontinue the all-electric EX40 in the US market. The compact SUV, third-best-selling model in the US and second-highest internationally, dates back to 2017 with the electric Recharge variant debuting in 2019 before becoming EX40 in 2024. The 2028 XC40 features a revised front end with simplified design, updated headlights retaining the Thor's hammer design, and resculpted hood and fenders for a cleaner appearance.

The EX40 receives identical exterior changes but with a flat, body-colored grille instead of the diagonal slash design. Inside, both models get a larger 11.2-inch infotainment screen (up from 9 inches) mounted prominently on the dashboard, running updated Android Automotive with Google's Gemini AI assistant for enhanced navigation and voice control. However, the EX40 will no longer be available in the US starting 2028, leaving only the gasoline XC40 on American dealership lots. Volvo's all-electric EX40 will be discontinued in the US market beginning with the 2028 model year, despite receiving the same comprehensive updates as its gas-powered counterpart.

The refreshed XC40 arrives with a redesigned front fascia featuring simplified styling, updated lighting elements, and a more modern aesthetic that aligns with the brand's evolving design language. Inside, both vehicles gain a larger 11.2-inch infotainment display mounted prominently on the dashboard, alongside upgraded ambient lighting and the latest Android Automotive operating system integrated with Google's Gemini AI assistant. The EX40 maintains its distinctive flat, body-colored grille while the XC40 showcases the signature diagonal slash design elements.

However, 2028 marks the final generation of the EX40 in the US market, as Volvo shifts focus to its broader electric lineup including the EX30, EX60, and EX90 models.
