Microsoft and Hardware Competition
Microsoft announced the $2,599 Surface Laptop Ultra as a direct challenge to Apple's MacBook Pro lineup. Meanwhile, Apple's own Mac mini and MacBook Pro ecosystem gained expansion options as Sonnet released a Thunderbolt 5 enclosure adding PCI-E slots.
Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4
Repair site iFixit gave the new Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 a 4/10 repairability score. Separately, some owners have reported skin irritation from the devices. Apple Insider's full review called the Series 12 the best non-Ultra model yet, while watch OS 27 adds three new apps to the wrist.
Software Releases and Betas
Apple has released first release candidates for mac OS Sequoia 15.8.2 and mac OS Tahoe 26.7.2 to public beta testers. iOS 27.2 is also arriving sooner than expected, with the current beta 3 build highlighted in the 9to5Mac Daily recap. Users who want to strip out AI features now have an app-based option to turn off and delete Apple Intelligence, and Apple may officially support such removal on Macs.
Apple Home and LG Partnership
Apple's smart home push is expanding beyond its own hardware. LG is co-developing products, and FCC filings have revealed the designs of three upcoming LG accessories, while leaked images show an Apple-branded smart lock and thermostat. Apple Insider reports that Apple's own home security camera is still coming next year, and the broader category now includes other second-party partners beyond LG.
Prime Day Deals
Amazon's fall Prime Day sale is nearing its close, with discounts on Apple hardware including a $1,099 M5 MacBook Air and $179 AirPods Pro. Best Buy is also offering $260 off iPhone Air models, and Belkin charging stations are up to 53% off. Shoppers can find Samsung OLED TVs starting at $997.99 and Anker charging gear at reduced prices.
Policy and Regulation
Apple is aligning with European regulators on child safety, with Tim Cook's company reaching a rare agreement with Brussels. A broader EU plan to raise Big Tech taxes faces opposition both abroad and at home, and Apple may pay an annual lump sum under a revised tax compromise.
Upcoming Products and Chips
October is shaping up to be busy, with Apple expected to launch twelve new products and updates. A redesigned MacBook Pro is reportedly coming with three key changes, and analysis of the M5 and M6 chips shows performance gains at the 2nm scale. Apple is reportedly waiting on Samsung for a bezel-free OLED display, and the iPhone Duo's Quick Look reportedly offers a two-page layout.
Apps, Services, and Media
Meta's Muse AI agent has launched on the iPad App Store, and Meta has since launched Muse for iPad following weeks as a top iPhone app. Spotify is rolling out audiobooks to over 180 markets. Apple also released a free chapter from the Ted Lasso book The Richmond Way, and Formula 1 coverage on Apple TV will gain Dolby Atmos later this month.
Wallets and Transit
Apple Wallet support continues to expand transit options, with Boston's MBTA testing a new CharlieCard that works with Apple Wallet, and Manchester's Bee Card now fully supported.
