Waymo acquires Apple Car test site for $220M

Waymo confirmed it has purchased the 5,500‑acre Arizona proving ground formerly used by Apple’s abandoned autonomous‑vehicle effort. The Wittman site changes hands for $220 million, marking the largest cash return Apple has extracted from the decade‑long, $10 billion Project Titan venture. The deal was filed on June 5 and routed through Route 14 Investment Partners, a Delaware entity linked to Apple Car.

Apple acquired the property in 2021 after renting it for years, paying $125 million when it was still owned by SFI Grand Vista. Only a fraction of the acreage hosts test lanes—a 115‑acre city course, a 35‑acre dynamics area, and a four‑mile oval—while the rest sits idle. Selling it allows Apple to erase the last physical trace of the failed program.

For Waymo, the Arizona lot expands its test network beyond California and Ohio, offering a controlled environment for rider‑only runs, motion‑control scenarios, and future simulation work. The acquisition underscores the growing consolidation of autonomous‑vehicle assets as firms chase expansive, private spaces to accelerate development. It also gives Waymo a foothold in a desert region.
