Autonomous‑Vehicle Funding Soars Past 2025, Waymo Leads the Charge

Funding for autonomous‑vehicle start‑ups has surged in 2026, surpassing 2025 totals by more than two‑thirds. Crunchbase data shows $21.4 billion raised in 34 deals through mid‑April, a 262 % jump from the $5.9 billion that moved in 2025. Investors now focus on a handful of firms poised to market‑scale their AI.

Waymo’s $16 billion Series D in February alone accounts for three‑quarters of that total, lifting its valuation to $126 billion. Other megadeals include Shield AI’s $2 billion Series G and Wayve’s $1.3 billion Series D, bringing their post‑money values to $12.7 billion and $8.6 billion respectively. China now hosts the fastest‑growing deployment market.

With only a handful of IPOs on the horizon, Beijing‑based Momenta filed a confidential Hong Kong listing, targeting a valuation above $14 billion. Backed by General Motors, Tencent and Mercedes‑Benz, the move could signal a shift toward public capital for the sector. As Waymo’s parent Alphabet keeps it private, a potential spinoff would instantly make it one of the most valuable transport firms worldwide.

Investors now pour billions into a few leaders rather than spread bets across dozens. North America remains the largest funding hub, yet Asia‑Pacific, especially China, shows the quickest deployment growth, with Chinese firms raising some of the biggest rounds. This concentration sharpens competition and accelerates the transition from lab prototypes to commercial fleets.
