Apple is re-entering the automotive market by providing carmakers like Ford with new in-car software technology. Ford will be the first to use Apple's Map Kit for automotive software development, integrating it into the dashboards of its upcoming electric vehicle platform and supplying road data to Ford's Blue Cruise hands-free system.

This partnership represents a deeper integration than Apple's previous infotainment system, CarPlay. It leverages technology developed during Apple's past, abandoned Project Titan EV initiative. Eddy Cue, Apple's senior vice-president of services, stated the new Map Kit brings Maps "further into drivers’ daily lives," while Ford CEO Jim Farley called the deal "one of the company’s most important announcements."

The deal highlights Apple's extensive mapping data, crucial for developing self-driving capabilities. Automakers often struggle with software development, making partnerships with tech giants like Apple attractive. This move also comes as US regulations are set to restrict Chinese connected-car software, creating an opportunity for US tech companies.
