Perplexity AI Agent Runs on Mac mini, Accesses Local Files

AI search company Perplexity has launched Personal Computer, a Mac mini-based system that allows its AI agents to access and manipulate local files. The system, announced by CEO Aravind Srinivas, runs continuously on Apple's compact desktop and connects to Perplexity's cloud-based AI processing.

Personal Computer builds on Perplexity's existing Perplexity Computer platform, which acts as a project manager delegating tasks to various AI sub-agents. Unlike the cloud-based version, this new system runs locally on a Mac mini, giving the AI direct access to the user's applications and files. Srinivas specifically mentioned the Mac mini as the ideal platform for this always-on agent.

The system can automatically analyze, rename, and resize files without explicit user instructions, while still requiring approval for sensitive actions. Users can control their Personal Computer remotely through messaging apps, making the Mac mini function as an interface and storage depot rather than the primary processing unit. The company is currently operating a waitlist for access to the new system.
