Perplexity Unveils AI-Powered Mac App

Perplexity today launched a new Mac app featuring its hybrid local-cloud AI agent Personal Computer, expanding access beyond Max subscribers to include Pro and Enterprise users. The "personal orchestrator" combines local processing with cloud capabilities for enhanced security and productivity. All Mac users can download the app, though Personal Computer requires a paid subscription.

Personal Computer can access the Mac's file system and native applications to create and execute workflows across all apps. Activated by pressing both Command keys, it responds to text or voice commands and displays quick actions automatically. The AI can organize downloads folders, complete to-do lists, and compare local files with web information, with all actions auditable and reversible within a secure sandbox.

While Personal Computer works on any Mac with macOS 14 Sonoma or later, Perplexity recommends the Mac mini for optimal performance as it allows the agent to run continuously. The company plans to deprecate its older Mac app in the coming weeks as users transition to this new offering.
