iPhone 18 Pro A20 Chip: Faster, Efficient, and Costly

The A20 and A20 Pro chips in the iPhone 18 Pro will benefit hugely from TSMC's 2-nanometer process, though Apple will pay dearly for these performance and power consumption improvements.

Apple is widely expected to use this process for the next generation of chips, including the iPhone 18 Pro, Pro Max, and iPhone Ultra. This transition involves a move to a GAA (Gate-All-Around) nanosheet architecture, which provides tighter control over power flow. If accurate, processing capability could be 18% better than previous generations, while power consumption could be reduced by approximately 30%.

However, these advancements come with a significant cost bump. Procurement costs for the chips are expected to increase significantly, with some reports suggesting the A20 could cost as much as $280 per chip. Consequently, expectations are high for Apple to increase the consumer price of the iPhone 18 Pro by $250 to $300 over the previous generation.
