Google adds Gemini Spark AI to macOS file handling

Google rolled out Gemini Spark for macOS, embedding its AI assistant directly into the desktop environment. The new option lets users command the model to open, edit, or reorganize files stored on the Mac, treating the AI as if it were a human operator. Access is gated by explicit permission, so only chosen documents can be touched today.

In practice, Gemini Spark can sort a cluttered Downloads folder into themed desktop directories or pull invoice PDFs into a Google Sheets spreadsheet without manual copy‑pasting. The beta also expands integrations to services like Canva, Dropbox, and OpenTable, while supporting the Model Context Protocol for future third‑party app connections. Multi‑step commands can be issued from a phone, executing entirely on the Mac.

Gemini Spark is offered in beta to Google AI Ultra subscribers aged 18+, a tier that starts at $99 per month and launches first in the United States. By granting local file access, Google pushes its assistant into the same workflow territory occupied by Claude Cowork and Perplexity’s PC platform, raising both productivity potential and overall security concerns for Mac users.
