Apple's appeal against a $634 million payment to Masimo has been rejected by U.S. District Judge James V. Selna, effectively finalizing the verdict. The lawsuit, concerning Apple Watch's blood oxygen sensor, did not result in a sales ban, as Apple successfully bypassed it with a software update in January 2024.

Apple had appealed the jury's findings, particularly the definition of a "patient monitor." Judge Selna denied Apple's requests for a new judgment or trial, cementing the payment obligation. While Apple has a history of pursuing appeals, this decision appears to leave no further recourse.

Masimo, now owned by Danaher, will receive the substantial payment. Although Masimo did not achieve a ban or redesign of the Apple Watch, the financial award is significant for its new parent company, which acquired Masimo for $9.9 billion. The patents in question are set to expire in 2028 and 2029.
