Samsung pauses Edge, TriFold development

Samsung is taking a step back from developing the next-generation Galaxy S25 Edge and Galaxy Z TriFold phones, according to COO Won-Joon Choi. The company hasn't decided when to release future Edge models after the current model's disappointing sales fell well below expectations. The Galaxy Z TriFold presented unique technical challenges due to its double-folding design.

The Galaxy S25 Edge, marketed as Samsung's thinnest phone at 5.8mm, required significant compromises including a smaller 3,900mAh battery and less powerful chip to achieve its slim profile. Despite Samsung's efforts to position it as a competitor to Apple's rumored iPhone Air, consumers responded poorly to the device, leading to sharp production cuts just a month after launch.

Samsung plans to maintain the S Pen in its Galaxy S Ultra phones but is developing more advanced technology to reduce the "penalty" of including the stylus, likely referring to device thickness. The company appears to be refocusing resources on its standard book-style foldables rather than pursuing more experimental form factors at this time.
