Google has significantly improved the scrolling experience in Chrome on Android through nearly three years of dedicated engineering work. The company reports that the browser now experiences 48% fewer scroll stutters compared to late 2023. This reduction in "scroll jank" is attributed to a redesign of several parts of Chrome's complex rendering pipeline.

Scroll jank occurs when Chrome cannot update a webpage quickly enough to match the user's finger movement, causing a noticeable jerky sensation. To address this, Google meticulously identified bottlenecks within the rendering pipeline. They implemented architectural changes, including optimizing touch input pathways, minimizing delays between browser processes, and leveraging the GPU more effectively.

Further enhancements involved collaborating with the Android operating system to prioritize input threads, ensuring touch events reach Chrome more consistently and leading to more reliable frame production. These behind-the-scenes improvements have culminated in a noticeably smoother browsing experience for users on Android devices.
