Samsung Finally Ups Battery in Galaxy Z Fold 8 After Years of Stagnation

Samsung is reportedly upgrading the Galaxy Z Fold 8's battery capacity to 5,000mAh, a significant jump from the 4,400mAh cell used since 2021. This marks the first meaningful battery increase for the Z Fold series in years, despite larger screens and higher performance demands. While the jump represents only a 13-14 percent increase over the Fold 7, it would be the largest battery Samsung has ever used in a regular Fold model. The upgrade comes after competitors like Honor and OPPO managed to fit much larger batteries into slimmer foldable designs.

The Fold 8's battery design will likely follow the dual-cell setup common in Samsung's foldables. Leaked specs point to one cell rated around 2,369mAh and another at 2,485mAh, combining for a rated capacity of roughly 4,845mAh – figures Samsung would market as a typical 5,000mAh capacity. This design is necessary for foldable phones, with each half housing its own battery. The improvement, however, is modest compared to some Chinese brands offering foldables with 6,000mAh batteries in similarly thin form factors.

While the battery upgrade is welcomed, it arrives later than some consumers might like. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is expected to launch around mid-2026 alongside the Z Flip 8, which may not receive a battery upgrade itself. The move signals Samsung finally addressing a long-standing criticism regarding battery life in its flagship foldables, though the pace of improvement remains slower than some rivals.
