Nothing and its sub-brand CMF are publicly combating the surge of counterfeit tech products, particularly in India, where over 1,100 fake items have been seized. The company’s co-founder, Akis Evangelidis, highlighted the growing sophistication of knockoffs in a YouTube video, noting that scammers replicate packaging, design, and even pairing processes to deceive buyers. These fakes pose risks due to unregulated quality and lack of warranties, with some imitations using misleading phrases like “compatible with” to bypass brand restrictions.

Evangelidis and Arpit, head of Nothing’s smart product business in India, advised consumers to verify brand names closely, avoid listings with generic titles, and scrutinize review counts—low ratings often signal fakes. Price discrepancies also matter: “If it’s too good to be true, it’s because it’s not true,” Evangelidis warned. The video showcased side-by-side comparisons of authentic and counterfeit products, emphasizing that even seasoned tech enthusiasts struggle to distinguish them.

While larger brands like Apple and Samsung address counterfeiting privately, Nothing’s transparent approach—including social media engagement and direct consumer education—sets a precedent. The company urges buyers to purchase exclusively through official channels, as spoofed serial numbers and forged packaging render traditional verification methods unreliable. This strategy not only protects customers but also underscores the broader challenge of combating tech scams in an era of hyper-realistic fakes.

The rise of counterfeit tech mirrors trends in luxury goods, but digital marketplaces amplify the threat. By prioritizing awareness, Nothing aims to empower consumers to spot fakes, a critical step in an industry where online scams thrive. As Evangelidis stated, “Education is the only way to stay ahead,” a message more brands must adopt to safeguard their customers and reputations.
