Googlebook Laptops Replace Chromebooks With Gemini AI at Core

Google is replacing Chromebooks with a new laptop category called Googlebooks, built entirely around Gemini AI. Announced at The Google Show, these devices mark the company's shift from traditional operating systems to what Google calls an "intelligence system." The first models from Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo arrive this fall.

The standout feature is Magic Pointer, which lets users hover over elements like dates in emails to instantly trigger AI actions like calendar event creation. Users can also point at images to combine them — placing furniture into room photos, for example. Gemini can generate custom widgets pulling data from Gmail, Calendar, and Drive.

Googlebooks will run Android apps directly without downloads or emulation, and Quick Access lets users browse phone files directly in the laptop's file browser. Unlike current Android desktop mode, these devices allow pinning apps, files, and folders to the desktop — bringing them closer to traditional Windows or MacBook experiences. Pricing and specifications remain undisclosed.

This positions Google to compete directly with Apple and Microsoft, turning Android into a cross-platform OS that could genuinely challenge Windows laptops and MacBooks, especially for education-focused workloads where Chromebooks originally dominated.
