Googlebook Replaces Chromebook with AI-Powered Laptops

Google is replacing its beloved Chromebook brand with something new: Googlebook. The search giant has teamed up with Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo to launch these AI-powered laptops this fall. Each OEM will create its own version of the Googlebook, bringing unique designs while sharing the new branding and software stack. This marks a significant shift for Google's laptop strategy after years of promoting Chromebooks as affordable, cloud-first computers.

The focus here is deep Gemini AI integration. Google is including "Magic Pointer," which uses AI to understand what's on your screen and provide contextual assistance or generate images. There's also "Cast My Apps" for connecting Android phones directly to the laptop—similar to Apple's iPhone Mirroring. A glowing "Glowbar" RGB strip appears in official renders, though whether it's more than cosmetic remains unclear.

These devices may run on "Aluminium OS," a new Android-based PC operating system built on Android 16. Google plans to merge ChromeOS and its Android for PC project into a single platform, combining its desktop operating system efforts. The hardware specifications remain unknown, with more details expected at today's Android Show I/O Edition.
