Google Messages Adds Real-Time Location Sharing to Compete with WhatsApp and Telegram

Google Messages is rolling out real-time location sharing, letting users broadcast their live movements directly in chats without switching to Maps. The feature, part of RCS (Rich Communication Services), allows recipients to track a sender’s location on an embedded map that updates continuously. Users can choose sharing durations of 1 hour, today only, indefinitely, or custom cutoff, with an option to stop sharing instantly.

Privacy controls are central to the rollout. Users must manually enable location sharing in the "+" menu during a conversation, and permissions determine who can view the map. Google emphasizes that this is distinct from static location sharing, as updates occur in real time. The feature is currently limited to RCS chats, excluding SMS conversations.

This update positions Messages as a more versatile tool, rivaling competitors like WhatsApp and Telegram, which have offered similar functionality for years. Google’s delayed integration of location sharing into its flagship messaging app highlights a broader trend of consolidating utility features within single platforms. For Android users, this means fewer app switches for coordination tasks like meetups or ride-sharing.

While convenient, the feature raises questions about digital privacy. Google insists controls are robust, but critics argue location tracking inherently carries risks. The company’s focus on RCS as a modern messaging standard suggests this is just one step in making Messages a comprehensive alternative to third-party apps. Real-time location sharing is now available in the latest Messages beta, with a full rollout expected in the coming weeks.
