Google Images is celebrating its 25th anniversary with a significant redesign and the integration of AI-powered features. The platform is rolling out a "dynamic, immersive gallery" that updates in real-time, tailored to users' interests. This new interface, inspired by apps like Keep and Photos, will display images in a collage-like format and allows users to save content into personalized "Collections." The redesign is starting to roll out to English desktop users in the U.S. over the next few weeks.

In addition to the gallery update, Google Images is bringing Nano Banana, its AI image generation capability, to AI Overviews. Users can now prompt the AI to create custom visuals for specific needs, with generated images appearing at the top of AI Overviews. The platform will also offer real-world image examples that match the prompt beneath the AI-generated content.

This milestone marks 25 years since Google Images launched in July 2001, following the global fascination with Jennifer Lopez's green Versace dress. The company highlighted the evolution of its image search, from the initial launch to features like Similar Images (2009), Lens (2018), and Circle to Search (2024), underscoring a continued focus on visual search innovation.
