Chrome Manifest V2 Removal Threatens Popular Ad Blockers

Google Chrome is preparing to drop Manifest V2 support entirely, which will break compatibility with many legacy extensions. The change targets Chrome versions 150 or 151, expected later this month and shortly after. This shift ends nearly five years of transition work toward the newer extension framework.

Manifest V2 allowed extensions like uBlock Origin to perform dynamic filtering and run freely in the background. Manifest V3 introduces stricter limitations on how extensions interact with web traffic, restricting advanced blocking techniques that made older ad blockers so effective. The framework change fundamentally alters extension capabilities rather than just updating APIs.

Users will need to migrate to Manifest V3-compatible alternatives such as uBlock Origin Lite. While these newer blockers function, they lack some of the sophisticated filtering options that made their predecessors popular. Other Chromium-based browsers including Microsoft Edge and Opera may face similar challenges, though vendors could potentially maintain Manifest V2 support independently.

The transition represents Google's push for improved security and performance, but creates friction for users who depend on powerful ad-blocking tools. Publishers benefit from reduced ad blocking, though user backlash over browsing experience may influence adoption rates of the newer extension format.
