Samsung Scraps Cheaper Vision Pro Display Tech

Samsung Display has reportedly halted development of a specialized OLEDoS panel, codenamed G-VR, intended for a lower-cost Apple Vision Pro successor. This component, designed to use a glass substrate for display formation, aimed to significantly reduce manufacturing costs compared to the current Vision Pro's silicon substrate technology.

The G-VR panel would have offered a pixel density in the 1600–1700 PPI range, roughly half that of the original Vision Pro's 3386 PPI. Mass production was anticipated after 2028, but Samsung Display has now ended its development process.

This decision appears to stem from Apple's strategic shift, reportedly focusing more on AI smart glasses rather than a direct, cheaper follow-up to the Vision Pro. Reports indicate Apple has paused plans for a Vision Pro overhaul to redirect resources, and future roadmaps may prioritize smart glasses over a more accessible immersive headset.

The scrapping of this display technology suggests a potential delay or complete redirection for Apple's extended reality hardware strategy, moving away from a mass-market approach for headsets and towards other form factors. This could mean consumers will not see a more affordable Vision Pro device in the near future.
