Apple's OLED Expansion: iPad mini and MacBook Pro Production Begins

Samsung Display has started mass production of OLED panels for a new iPad mini. This move replaces the older LCD technology found in the iPad mini 7, providing users with deeper blacks and better power efficiency. Analysts expect a late 2026 launch for the device as Apple slowly shifts its entire tablet lineup to OLED.

Production for the MacBook Pro's OLED panels starts in July using a new 8.6-generation production line. This redesign might arrive as a high-tier "MacBook Ultra" and will likely be the first Mac to feature touchscreen technology. Depending on memory chip shortages, this laptop could launch late this year or in early 2027.

Samsung and LG Display are now the sole suppliers for Apple's late-year OLED needs. While LG handles the Apple Watch Series 12, Samsung exclusively produces panels for the foldable iPhone and these new displays. Meanwhile, BOE is out of the iPhone 18 supply chain following quality issues that delayed previous shipments.

These shifts signal a broader strategy to eliminate LCD and mini-LED across premium hardware. Apple is prioritizing high-contrast displays to maintain a competitive edge in the luxury laptop and tablet markets. This transition relies heavily on Samsung's latest manufacturing capacity to meet volume demands.
