OpenAI Threatens Apple with Legal Action Over Siri Deal

OpenAI is preparing legal action against Apple over their ChatGPT integration in Siri, according to Bloomberg. The company hired outside lawyers to explore options that could include sending Apple a notice alleging breach of contract without immediately filing a lawsuit. The partnership, announced at WWDC 2024, allowed ChatGPT to serve as a fallback for Siri's world-knowledge queries.

OpenAI expected the deal would drive billions of dollars in annual subscriptions through iPhone Settings, but those numbers never materialized. An unnamed executive said the company has "done everything from a product perspective" while Apple "has not held up its end of the deal." Apple didn't pay OpenAI for the technology—receiving only a cut of any subscriptions generated through the integration.

The timing is notable: Apple is expected to announce a next-generation Siri powered by Google Gemini at WWDC, and iOS 27 will reportedly let users integrate other AI models including Anthropic's Claude. OpenAI is also developing its own hardware, led by former Apple design chief Jony Ive, and has been recruiting Apple engineers—a move that's upset Apple executives for over a year.
