Apple lets users swap ChatGPT for Claude or Gemini in iOS 27

Apple’s upcoming iOS 27, iPadOS 27 and macOS 27 introduce an “Extensions” framework that lets users pick a third‑party generative AI as the default behind Apple Intelligence features such as Writing Tools and Image Playground. The move follows a 2026 agreement with Google to run a Gemini‑based model for Siri and other services, expanding beyond the OpenAI partnership that debuted ChatGPT on iOS 26.

Developers can ship extensions that expose their own models, meaning Claude, Gemini or any future chatbot could answer Siri queries, draft text, or generate images directly from the OS. Apple also plans separate voice profiles: Siri retains its classic timbre while responses from third‑party engines play a distinct voice, giving users immediate feedback on which model is speaking.

By treating AI as a plug‑in, Apple sidesteps a single‑vendor lock‑in and gives consumers the flexibility to switch providers without changing apps. The strategy could pressure OpenAI to improve its offering while opening the door for new entrants to compete for the lucrative Apple ecosystem.
