Netflix rolls out iPhone app with vertical video feed

Netflix is rolling out a revamped iPhone app that swaps the traditional grid for a scrolling vertical video feed. The change follows criticism of the streamer’s Apple TV app, which relied on a clunky custom player. In a shareholder letter accompanying its latest earnings, the company said the update will land before the end of April this quarter for users.

The redesign aims to mirror Netflix’s expanding catalog and make discovery quicker on mobile devices. By presenting thumbnails as autoplaying clips, the feed mimics the experience of short‑form platforms while still funneling viewers into long‑form titles. The company also hinted at broader UI tweaks, tying the mobile refresh to recent work on its new TV interface for its global audience.

Alongside the app overhaul, co‑founder and chairman Reed Hastings confirmed he will step down from Netflix’s board, marking a leadership shift as the streamer diversifies into games with the launched Netflix Playground. Price hikes on all tiers, including the ad‑supported option, have sparked subscriber churn, so the vertical feed may be an attempt to boost engagement before competitors tighten offerings.
