Apple's first foldable iPhone is expected to debut this fall with a major software upgrade. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, the device will support side-by-side app multitasking, bringing a feature long available on iPads to the iPhone lineup for the first time.

Codenamed iPhone Fold, the device will run iOS 27 and feature an interior display roughly the size of an iPad mini. The foldable will also include an external screen comparable to a small iPhone. Gurman reports that Apple is developing new iOS layouts with sidebars along the left edge, similar to many iPad apps, allowing developers to adapt their iPhone software for the expanded interface.

While the iPhone Fold won't support running iPad apps directly, it will offer iPad-like layouts in landscape orientation. The device is expected to have a wider aspect ratio than existing foldables, optimized for video watching and adapting current iPhone apps. Apple plans to unveil the iPhone Fold alongside the iPhone 18 Pro in September, though iPhone Fold-specific features likely won't be revealed until the hardware launch.
