iPhone Fold Launch to Boost Foldable Phone Panel Shipments

Apple's anticipated entry into the foldable phone market is poised to significantly revive shipments of foldable smartphone panels this year, according to Counterpoint Research. Following a 7% decline in the first quarter, panel shipments are now projected to grow by 24% for the full year, with revenues expected to surge by approximately 48%.

This rebound is attributed partly to the shifting consumer preference towards "in-fold" designs, which are overtaking the "clamshell" form factor. While Apple's launch is a major catalyst, the trend is also driven by productivity enhancements and larger screen experiences offered by these devices. BOE remains the dominant supplier, holding 45% of the market share.

Samsung Display, which saw its own shipments rise 37% and market share increase by seven percentage points, is reportedly set to be the sole panel supplier for Apple's first foldable iPhone. This deal is expected to solidify Samsung Display's strong market position and capitalize on the growing demand for foldable technology.

The research firm expects the second half of the year to mark a rebound, contingent on successful product launches and positive user experiences from both Apple and Samsung, pushing foldables back into a growth cycle.
