iPhone 18 Pro camera costs soar

Apple's upcoming iPhone 18 Pro will introduce a significant camera upgrade with a variable-aperture main lens, according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. However, this advanced technology comes with a steep price tag, as the new lens system carries a 50% higher cost than Apple's current high-end 7P lenses. The component cost increase adds pressure on Apple's margins.

Kuo reports Apple will source 40-50% of these components from Sunny Optical, with Largan remaining the primary supplier. This timing couldn't be worse for Apple, which already faces rising memory costs squeezing profitability. The variable aperture represents Apple's push to match Android competitors offering similar optical flexibility.

Looking further ahead, Kuo reveals Apple plans to move from flip-chip to an improved chip-on-board design for the ultra-wide camera in 2028 iPhones. Sunny Optical is well-positioned to supply these components as well. The camera roadmap shows Apple's continued investment in optical technology, though the higher costs may eventually reach consumers.
