Fable reboot delayed to February 2027 to avoid GTA VI competition

Microsoft has pushed the Fable reboot to February 2027, moving it out of fall 2026 and away from Grand Theft Auto VI's November 19 release. Playground Games needs extra time to polish the fantasy RPG, which will now enjoy a less crowded launch window. The delay also dodges competition from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 and Control Resonant.

From announcement to release, the game will have taken seven years to develop. Microsoft first revealed the project in 2020 but didn't share substantial gameplay footage until January 2026. The extended timeline suggests development challenges, though the company promises a major reveal during its June 7 showcase. This gives fans their first real look at the ambitious reboot.

Microsoft confirmed Fable will launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PC via Steam, and Game Pass Ultimate. Earlier demos showcased detailed character creation tools and advanced NPC simulation systems. The multiplatform approach marks a shift for Xbox exclusives, potentially expanding the audience for the long-awaited series revival.

Avoiding the holiday blockbuster season could benefit Fable's visibility, but the prolonged development cycle raises questions about the project's scope. Seven years represents a significant investment for Microsoft, especially as the gaming landscape shifts toward shorter development cycles and live-service models.
