Apple's Siri Gets Major Chatbot Overhaul in iOS 27

Apple is transforming Siri into an advanced chatbot for iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27, shifting from voice commands to conversational AI. The revamped Siri will support text and voice interactions, retain conversation history, and perform complex tasks like web searches, image generation, and document analysis. Integration with Apple’s ecosystem will replace Spotlight search, while Siri Suggestions gain deeper access to user data for personalized prompts.

A standalone Siri app will launch alongside iOS 27, featuring chat bubbles, favorite chats, and searchable conversation history. Apple plans to embed Siri into the Dynamic Island, with a glowing icon and translucent panels for results. Developers will gain an "Ask Siri" button for app-specific queries, and the iOS keyboard may include a "Write with Siri" tool. The chatbot will also handle multi-step tasks across apps, such as editing photos in Photos or coding in Xcode.

Apple’s partnership with Google will power Siri’s AI using a custom Gemini-based model, reportedly more advanced than Apple’s internal systems. While Siri will process some data locally, heavy queries may rely on Google’s servers via Tensor Processing Units. Privacy concerns loom, as Apple debates how much conversational memory Siri should retain. Third-party chatbots like Claude and Gemini will integrate via a new "Extensions" setting, allowing users to choose between Apple’s Siri, OpenAI’s ChatGPT, or Google’s Gemini.

The update debuts at Apple’s June 8 Worldwide Developers Conference, with full rollout expected by late 2026. This overhaul positions Siri as a direct competitor to ChatGPT and Gemini, addressing years of lag in AI capabilities. By embedding chatbot features into iOS, Apple aims to retain users amid rising demand for AI-driven productivity tools.
