Apple is rolling out a major usability upgrade with iOS 26.4, making it dramatically easier to customize subtitles directly within the video player on iPhone and iPad. Previously, users had to dig through Accessibility Settings to adjust subtitle appearance, but the new update brings these controls front and center.

The redesigned Subtitles menu now includes a dedicated Style section with preset options like 'Classic', 'Large Text', 'Outline Text', and 'Transparent Background'. Users can also create custom styles by adjusting font, size, and color. This change addresses growing demand for subtitle customization, driven by both the popularity of foreign language content and ongoing audio quality issues in mainstream media.

The new functionality works across Apple's native video player, including the Apple TV app and Safari video playback. Third-party apps using the native player will automatically gain these features. iOS 26.4 is currently in developer beta and expected to reach public users in March or April, marking a significant improvement in video accessibility and user experience.
