Blackmagic Camera App Adds Apple Watch Remote Control

Blackmagic Design has updated its Blackmagic Camera app for iPhone to integrate with Apple Watch, ProDock hardware, and ATEM switchers, transforming the iPhone from a standalone recorder into a controllable component of professional production systems. The update introduces remote monitoring and control capabilities that position the iPhone within coordinated broadcast environments rather than as an isolated tool.

Remote control via Apple Watch addresses a persistent challenge for iPhone videographers. When the device is mounted on a tripod or rig, touching the screen can cause unwanted shake or disrupt shots. The Apple Watch companion app allows operators to start and stop recording, check framing and audio levels, and adjust settings like exposure and focus directly from their wrist without physical contact with the iPhone. This functionality works immediately for any iPhone shooter without requiring additional Blackmagic hardware investment.

The update reveals Blackmagic's dual strategy: Apple Watch control improves usability for a broad range of iPhone users while ATEM integration and hardware support target professional environments already built around Blackmagic gear. The company is reinforcing its end-to-end workflow where capture, switching, and editing happen within its ecosystem, rather than competing directly with consumer camera apps. The Blackmagic Camera app supports iPhone and iPad models running iOS/iPadOS 17 or later with an A12 Bionic chip or newer, along with Macs with Apple Silicon, Apple Vision devices, and Apple Watch on watchOS 10.6 or newer.
