Apple's New MacBook: $699, No More Butterfly Keyboards

Apple is reportedly reviving the MacBook brand with a new 12.9-inch model that addresses all the flaws of its 2015 predecessor. The original ultra-thin laptop suffered from the infamous butterfly keyboard, underpowered Intel processors, single USB-C port, and poor battery life, all at a premium $1,299 price point.

This time around, Apple silicon will power the device, likely using an A18 Pro chip that should easily handle everyday tasks. The new model is expected to feature multiple USB-C ports or a combination of USB-C and MagSafe charging, solving the single-port limitation. Apple's silicon advancements also promise better battery life despite the thin design.

The most significant change may be the price: rumors suggest a $699 starting price, making it several hundred dollars cheaper than the current MacBook Air. Rather than positioning it as a premium future-of-computing device, Apple appears to be targeting iPhone users who haven't yet adopted a Mac, or those using PCs and Chromebooks.
