Apple's App Store tracks every tap for tailored app picks

Apple rolled out Personalized Collections in the App Store, a feature that curates app suggestions based on each user’s download history and in‑app behavior. The system surfaces picks on the Apps, Games and Search tabs, updating as usage patterns evolve. Developers gain a new channel to reach potential customers, while shoppers see recommendations framed as “because you like X” for iPhone and iPad.

Security researchers known as Mysk warned that the App Store app records every tap, swipe and even typing speed to fuel the new recommendations. Their analysis shows raw interaction data is sent to Apple in real time, with no user‑visible switch to disable collection for every user. The same telemetry also powers App Notes, brief explanations attached to each suggested app.

Apple defends the approach as a way to surface relevant content, but the lack of opt‑out contradicts its long‑standing privacy narrative. Consumers now face a trade‑off: more targeted app discovery versus constant behavioral monitoring. With rollout beginning this week in the U.S., the debate over data collection versus convenience will shape how the App Store evolves in the coming months.
