Apple Stores Every Keystroke in App Store Searches, Researchers Find

Apple tracks every single keystroke users type in App Store searches, recording detailed timing data that reveals typing speed and patterns. Security researchers Mysk discovered the extensive data collection on June 9, finding that each letter entered generates timestamped records sent directly to Apple.

The researchers shared an image showing ten separate data points from searching "Tim Cook," with each record capturing individual letters and precise timing down to fractions of a second. This granular data collection extends beyond just search terms—Apple also stores which tab users are browsing and their operating system version.

During WWDC in early June, Apple announced major App Store changes aimed at helping developers, including new Personalized Recommendations. However, the company's implementation relies on this detailed analytics data that users cannot disable or opt out of, raising questions about privacy practices.

While Apple argues some data collection is necessary for search suggestions, the researchers note there's no legitimate need to store intermediate keystrokes like "T" and "Ti" before completing "Tim." Unlike Google, Apple doesn't monetize user data, but the lack of alternatives in regions without third-party app stores leaves users with no escape from this tracking.
