Apple Touchscreen MacBook to Launch with M5 Chips Instead of M6

Apple's first touchscreen MacBook will reportedly use existing M5 Pro and M5 Max chips rather than the upcoming M6 generation, according to Bloomberg. The devices are expected to launch between late 2024 and early 2025, marking a significant shift from Apple's long-standing refusal to add touchscreens to Macs.

These new MacBook models will feature OLED displays, another first for Apple's computer lineup, and come in 14-inch and 16-inch configurations. Apple plans to bring the Dynamic Island to Mac for the first time, replacing the current notch design. The laptops will also introduce an updated industrial design, representing the first major visual refresh for high-end MacBooks since 2021.

This chip decision contradicts earlier expectations that the touchscreen MacBook would debut with M6 Pro and M6 Max processors. Bloomberg notes that Apple is already testing M7 Pro and M7 Max chips for a potential update as early as late 2027. The move suggests Apple wants to accelerate touchscreen MacBook availability without waiting for next-generation silicon.

The branding remains uncertain, though MacBook Ultra appears likely given the premium features. Consumers should expect pricing consistent with current MacBook Pro models, making this a significant investment for early adopters of Apple's touchscreen Mac vision.
