Apple shifts macOS branding to pure version numbers

Apple updated several Mac support pages, swapping the traditional macOS brand names for plain version numbers. A Spatial Audio guide now reads “requires macOS 15 or later” instead of “macOS Sequoia,” while Wi‑Fi password instructions changed “macOS Ventura” to “macOS 13” and a Monterey article now cites “macOS 12.” The edits focus solely on naming. These revisions also update internal search tags for consistency.

The change extends to Apple’s marketing material for the Golden Gate release. On the preview site the OS appears as “macOS 27 Golden Gate,” and WWDC press releases refer to it simply as macOS 27, dropping name. Last year’s announcements used “macOS Tahoe 26” or just “macOS Tahoe,” suggesting a move toward numeric branding. The numeric label aims to reduce confusion across ecosystems.

Switching to numbers simplifies documentation and aligns macOS with iOS, iPadOS and watchOS, which already use version digits. Developers and support staff gain a consistent reference, while consumers may find it easier to match software updates to hardware compatibility lists. The shift signals Apple’s intent to streamline its OS naming convention moving forward. Apple expects the change to streamline future update communications.
