Apple's iOS 27 code name change hints at AI shift

A fresh tip from Mark Gurman's Power On newsletter reveals Apple has swapped internal codenames for its upcoming OS releases. iOS 27 and macOS 27 were previously tagged Buttercup and Honeycrisp, but the names now read Rave and Fizz. The same memo lists watchOS 27 as Orchid, tvOS 27 as Lotus, and visionOS 27 as Eclipse.

Gurman links the rename to Apple’s evolving AI roadmap. The newsletter says Apple Intelligence will run on‑device Apple Foundation Models trained with a Gemini‑3 equivalent, leveraging Google’s TPUs via a private‑cloud compute layer. A more powerful Siri is slated for iOS 27, hinting that the code‑name swap mirrors the new partnership.

If the codenames truly reflect a strategic pivot, developers can expect tighter AI integration across iOS, macOS and visionOS later this year. Apple plans a public preview in February, beta builds shortly after, and a full rollout with iOS 26.4 by April. Watch WWDC 2027 in June for final Rave and Fizz details.
