Apple drops its first AirPods Max 2 firmware beta, marking the headset’s entry into the beta program that began with i OS 27 and mac OS 27 releases. The update, version 9.0.304 build 9A5304b, arrives alongside new betas for AirPods 4, AirPods Pro 2 (USB‑C), AirPods Pro 3 and the 4th‑gen ANC model. Consumers can enroll via Bluetooth settings on their Macs or iOS devices.

The firmware includes new features hinted at during WWDC26, such as a custom EQ and Apple Gym Kit syncing. Those adjustments aim to sharpen audio profiles and integrate workout data, giving users a more tailored listening experience. Apple’s beta rollout follows the company’s pattern of testing updates on a subset of users before public release.

Users enable beta mode by opening System Settings > Bluetooth, selecting the (i) icon, and turning on the “AirPods Beta Updates” toggle. Once activated, firmware downloads automatically when the buds sit in their case near an iOS or macOS device. This seamless process keeps testers up to date without manual intervention.

Apple’s rollout signals the company’s commitment to refining the AirPods ecosystem ahead of the next major hardware refresh. By rolling out beta firmware now, the firm gives developers early access to new APIs and lets users experience upcoming audio enhancements before official releases. This strategy tightens the feedback loop and positions Apple to iterate faster on future models.
