AirPods Max 2 vs Pro 3: Worth $550 or Overpriced?

After years of dismissing the AirPods Max as overpriced, I finally tested the AirPods Max 2 and discovered something unexpected. While these premium over-ear headphones deliver exceptional sound quality with Active Noise Cancellation, Transparency mode, and Personalized Spatial Audio, they didn't sound dramatically better than the AirPods Pro 3 that cost half as much.

Both models now share identical Apple ecosystem features including the H2 chip, Adaptive Audio, and Live Translation. The key differences come down to form factor: the Max 2 offers larger drivers, 20 hours of continuous playback, premium materials, physical controls, and wired USB-C lossless audio support. Meanwhile, the Pro 3 adds IP57 water resistance, a heart rate sensor, hearing aid functionality, MagSafe charging, and 30 hours of total battery life with the case.

Despite my high expectations, I couldn't hear a meaningful difference between the two when using Bluetooth. The AirPods Max 2 sound fantastic with rich bass and clean vocals, but the Pro 3 delivers 99% of that experience. While the Max 2's wired lossless audio option provides better fidelity, most users will likely use them wirelessly anyway. For me, the Pro 3's portability, extra features, and $224 sale price make it the clear winner over the $550 AirPods Max 2.
