AirPods Max 2 Review: Minor Tweaks, Same Price

Apple's AirPods Max 2 hit stores a month ago, and after several weeks of daily use the verdict is clear: they sound superb but bring almost nothing new. The headphones retain the original’s metal frame, five color options, and 386‑gram weight, while swapping the Lightning port for USB‑C. At $549, the price matches the premium feel, yet the design remains unchanged, and the unchanged aesthetics feel dated compared to competitors.

Apple does introduce a few upgrades, most notably the H2 chip borrowed from the 2022 AirPods Pro 2. It powers adaptive EQ, live translation, and a claimed 1.5× boost in active‑noise‑cancellation, though real‑world tests show only marginal gains. Battery life stretches to 20 hours with ANC on, and charging is faster via USB‑C, in everyday scenarios.

Despite the audio refinements, the Max 2 inherits the original’s notorious mesh headband that stretches over time, and the hard‑plastic case still offers minimal protection or a way to put the headphones into deep sleep outside the case. For owners of the first‑gen Max, the upgrade feels optional; newcomers may find better value hunting for discounted original units, especially given the price tag.
