Avoid Apple Upgrade Lease Traps

Apple's new "Apple Upgrade" leasing program offers lower monthly payments for devices, but carries the risk of users becoming trapped in a continuous lease cycle. Unlike the previous iPhone Upgrade Program, this new lease does not result in outright ownership at the end of the term without a significant balloon payment.

For instance, a MacBook Pro with 16GB memory and 1TB storage can be leased for $38.99 per month over 36 months. However, owning it outright would require a final balloon payment of $585. Similarly, a 24-month lease at $53.99 per month would necessitate a $703 balloon payment. For those unable to afford these substantial final payments, the program encourages a cycle of returning the device and leasing a new one, mirroring car leasing practices.

A more financially astute approach, if feasible, involves paying the monthly lease amount while simultaneously saving for the balloon payment. For the 36-month MacBook Pro lease, this would mean a total monthly outlay of $55.25 ($38.99 lease + $16.26 savings). This strategy ensures ownership of the device after the lease term, allowing for potential resale to offset future upgrade costs.
