A San Francisco math teacher at Lowell High School was placed on indefinite leave after allegedly assigning quiz questions that fat-shamed students and promoted sexist ideas. Principal Jan Bautista notified families that teacher Tom Chan would be absent indefinitely, with no return date set. The move came after a parent raised concerns about quiz content that reinforced harmful stereotypes.

Chan, who has taught at Lowell for over 20 years, allegedly included questions about dating costs based on weight and a problem titled "Mr. Chan vs. The Fat Kid" involving punting a student. One quiz asked students to calculate dating expenses based on a girl's weight or "sexy points," while another referenced giving candy to "a fat kid." The parent said students feared retaliation if they complained about the content.

District officials confirmed they were investigating the allegations and emphasized that all reports are taken seriously. Beyond the quiz questions, concerns were raised about Chan posting student videos on YouTube under "Grades vs. Dignity," where teens performed for extra credit. The parent argued that requiring students to answer questions on untaught material created an abusive environment in the high-pressure academic setting.
