A series of tornadoes ripped through Michigan and Oklahoma Friday night, killing at least six people and injuring more than a dozen others. In Union City, Michigan, three residents died when a supercell thunderstorm spawned an especially violent tornado that destroyed homes and businesses. Paul Guthrie watched his roof crack and his shed fly across the street in what he described as "five seconds of wind."

Michigan's southwestern counties bore the brunt of the destruction, with tornadoes hitting Union City, Edwardsburg, and areas near St. Joseph County. Governor Gretchen Whitmer confirmed injuries across multiple counties. In Tulsa, Oklahoma, a tornado damaged buildings including the Peoria campus of Tulsa Tech, though no injuries were reported there. The National Weather Service tracked 13 tornado reports across both states as the storms moved through.

Recovery efforts began Saturday morning as residents surveyed shattered windows, downed power lines, and scattered debris. The threat extends beyond the immediate disaster zone, with meteorologists warning of continued severe weather risk from central Texas to western New York through the weekend. The Storm Prediction Center forecasts additional thunderstorms capable of producing flash floods, damaging winds, and more tornadoes, particularly in eastern Ohio, western Pennsylvania, and West Virginia.
