Senate Democrats on Tuesday blocked the advancement of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) to protest President Donald Trump’s resumption of hostilities with Iran. The delay occurred amidst escalating tensions between the US and Iran, highlighting Democratic frustration over continued US involvement despite a previous war powers resolution.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer stated his party could not support the defense bill while ignoring the "nation's most urgent national security crisis." All Democrats present voted against the measure, preventing it from reaching the required 60 votes for advancement. This action came after Trump threatened, then rescinded, a fee on vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz, while maintaining a blockade of Iranian ports.

Schumer criticized Trump's handling of the situation, calling it a "recipe for utter disaster" with "no plan and no exit strategy." Republicans expressed anger over the obstruction of the NDAA, which authorizes $1.15 trillion in defense spending, includes pay raises for service members, and funds for new military technologies. Republican leaders accused Democrats of prioritizing obstruction over supporting the military.
