A federal immigration agent fatally shot a 26-year-old Colombian man in Biddeford, Maine, on Monday. According to Sen. Angus King, Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin stated the agent opened fire after the man allegedly "weaponized" his vehicle against agents pursuing him for deportation.

Advocacy groups report the victim was authorized to work in the U.S. and was leaving for work at the time of the incident. The FBI is leading the investigation, as the agents involved were not wearing body-worn cameras. Gov. Janet Mills stated that State Police and the attorney general’s office are assisting federal officials to determine the circumstances.

This incident marks the ninth death from encounters with federal immigration officials since the start of the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown and the second such killing in one week. The shooting occurred amid an intensified push for mass deportations, with ICE arresting more than 10,000 people over a five-day period in late June. Protesters gathered in Biddeford following the event, calling for the removal of ICE from their communities.
