Federal agents shot and killed Joan Sebastian Guerrero, a 26-year-old Colombian man, during an immigration enforcement operation in Biddeford, Maine on Monday. The ICE officer fired “fearing for public safety” as Guerrero “attempted to flee,” per a Department of Homeland Security statement released after nearly 12 hours of silence.

Conflicting accounts emerged: Sen. Angus King initially said Guerrero was the target of a warrant, but his office later stated he was NOT the target after speaking again with DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin. Neighbors described Guerrero as a husband, father, and delivery driver headed to work. Surveillance footage shows agents stopping his vehicle and pulling his body out.

The shooting follows another fatal ICE incident in Texas where Lorenzo Salgado Araujo was killed during a traffic stop. His brother reported a 20- to 30-minute ambulance delay. Both cases have sparked protests and demands for investigation. The Mexican Senate condemned the deaths of 17 Mexican citizens under the current administration.

Local officials and community members mourned, leaving flowers and signs reading “Immigrants make Biddeford great.” The Maine Attorney General has not released the victim’s name pending identification. Harris County DA issued nearly 20 subpoenas for the Texas case.
