A 16‑year‑old student from Frontier International Academy was forced into a van at gunpoint Monday morning near Detroit. A classmate dialed 911 while the girl was being driven to a Detroit convenience store. There, the suspect forced her to purchase cigarettes, then mouthed “help” to the clerk, Abdulrahman Abohatem. The incident unfolded just after 7 a.m., before the school bus arrived.

Police traced the van using the students’ cellphone pings and social‑media check‑ins, arriving seconds after Abohatem stepped behind protective glass, told the girl to hide, and kicked the assailant out. Officers recovered a handgun, seized the vehicle and placed Donald James Joseph Arthur Fields, 48, under arrest. He now faces two counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct, kidnapping, felonious assault and multiple firearm charges on video.

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy called the incident “every parent’s worst nightmare,” noting the survivor’s quick thinking prevented further harm. Fields is being held without bond in Wayne County Jail and is scheduled for a court appearance on April 30. Community leaders praised the clerk’s bravery, urging more training for frontline workers. The case shows how rapid civilian alerts and vigilant storefront staff can disrupt violent crimes.
