Kroger Taps Walmart Veteran Greg Foran as New CEO Amid Grocery Wars

Kroger plans to name former Walmart executive Greg Foran as its next CEO, according to a Wall Street Journal report. The appointment concludes a nearly yearlong search for permanent leadership after former CEO Rodney McMullen exited following an undisclosed ethics violation. An official announcement could come as early as Monday.

The move signals Kroger’s push for external expertise as it battles cash-strapped shoppers and rivals in the $1 trillion U.S. grocery market. The chain faces pressure to control food-price inflation and revive expansion plans after its $20 billion Albertsons merger collapsed in 2024. Foran’s experience turning around Walmart’s U.S. operations from 2014 to 2019 makes him a strategic hire for similar challenges.

Foran later led Air New Zealand through pandemic disruptions before returning to retail consulting. Interim CEO Ron Sargent had focused on cost-cutting and promotions during the transition. Investors will watch whether Foran can replicate his Walmart success by improving Kroger’s fresh food offerings and e-commerce capabilities.

Quick Fact: Kroger’s failed Albertsons bid totaled $20 billion in 2024.
