Russian strikes hit Ukraine’s Black Sea grain trade

Russian drone attacks on Odesa have cut storage capacity by a third, according to maritime security firm Ambrey, and shipowners are avoiding the port for fear of strikes.

Ukraine’s port authority reported 11 deaths in recent attacks, while analysts note that domestic purchase prices have vanished and freight quotes are scarce. The strikes threaten a major grain export route that supplies a third of global wheat, a key revenue source for Ukraine.

Experts warn that the risk of Russian drone and missile attacks, coupled with soaring insurance premiums, may force traders to divert grain via Danube ports and Romania’s Constanța, widening the potential impact on global grain supplies.

The escalation follows a week of Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian shipping. Analysts forecast a 20% drop in Russian wheat exports for July, with grain futures climbing to $6.95 a bushel, signaling a broader concern for global food security.
